The Indian protein gap

The Indian protein gap

Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize: a plate can look balanced and still leave you short on protein. A typical Indian meal - rice, roti, a sabzi, a little dal - is generous on carbohydrates but surprisingly light on the one nutrient that keeps you full and strong.
As a general guide, the body needs roughly 0.8- 1.0 gram of protein per body weight to prevent deficiency in case  of an individual with a sedentary or moderate lifestyle and more so for active individuals or athletes. For many people, that target is missed quietly, day after day, simply because their everyday foods were never built around protein in the first place.
The effects show up in small ways: feeling hungry again soon after eating, low afternoon energy, frequent cravings, and slower recovery after activity. None of it feels dramatic, which is exactly why the gap goes unnoticed for so long.
Closing it doesn’t require a complete diet overhaul. It usually just means making each meal and snack work a little harder. The goal is balance and protein is usually the piece that’s missing.
