Protein After 30 - What Changes for Women
- 2 min reading time
If the routine that kept you feeling strong at 25 doesn't quite do the same thing now, you are not imagining it. Something genuinely shifts after 30, and a surprising amount of it comes down to protein.
Muscle stops maintaining itself for free
From around the age of 30, the body's ability to build and hold on to muscle becomes less efficient. Muscle mass starts to decline gradually, often without any visible change on the weighing scale, because it happens quietly across years rather than weeks. Protein is the raw material your body uses to maintain that muscle, and the requirement does not fall as you get older. If anything, meeting it becomes harder.
Why this matters more for women
Women typically begin with less muscle mass than men, and bone density peaks in the late twenties before slowly tapering. Add monthly iron losses, pregnancy, breastfeeding and, later, the hormonal shifts of perimenopause, and the demands on the body stack up through exactly the decades when most women are busiest and eating in the smallest windows of time.
The 3 signs worth paying attention to
Feeling weaker in ordinary tasks such as carrying groceries or climbing stairs, with no change in weight. Recovery after exercise takes longer than you remember it taking. And hunger returns quickly after meals, which usually points to a plate that is generous with carbohydrates and light on protein. Any one of these on its own means very little. All three together are worth a closer look at your plate.
What actually helps
Spreading protein across the day rather than saving it for dinner. Most Indian eating patterns are back-loaded: a light breakfast, a rushed lunch, and the bulk of the day's protein at night. The body uses protein more effectively when it arrives in reasonable amounts at each meal, so the fix is usually adding a protein source to breakfast and to the mid-afternoon snack, not eating a great deal more overall.
