Protein Per 100 g vs Protein Per Serving: Why the Difference Matters

Two products can both say “20 g protein” and still not give you the same amount. Here's why.

The serving-size trick

Imagine Product A gives you 20 g protein in 100 g, while Product B gives you 20 g in just 60 g. At first glance, they look identical. They aren't. Once you put both numbers against the same 100 g reference, the comparison changes completely.

When 100 g actually helps

If you're comparing products, 100 g creates a common playing field. Serving sizes are decided by the product's label, and those serving sizes can differ. So comparing only the “per serving” number can sometimes be misleading.

But don't ignore the serving

If you're actually eating the food, the serving number matters because that's the amount you're consuming. The question isn't which number is correct. Both are. They're answering different questions.

A simple way to think about it

Shopping? Compare per 100 g.
Eating? Check per serving.
Tracking your intake? Use the amount you actually ate.
