Soya and Women’s Nutrition: Separating Facts from Internet Claims

Does soya support women’s nutrition? And what should we make of claims about hormones? The answer starts with separating a food’s nutritional value from claims that it can treat a health condition.

Focus on nutrition, not fear

Soya foods can contribute protein and other nutrients to a varied diet. They also contain isoflavones, a type of plant compound known as a phytoestrogen. These compounds have some structural similarity to oestrogen, but their effects are different and much weaker than those of the hormone produced by the body. This does not make soya a hormone treatment or justify calling it a food that “balances hormones”.

Keep menopause and bone-health claims in perspective.

Calcium-set tofu and calcium-fortified soya drinks can contribute calcium. However, their calcium content depends on the product, and eating soya is not a substitute for a complete approach to bone health.

Food and concentrated supplements are different

Results involving ordinary soya foods cannot automatically be applied to concentrated isoflavone supplements, or vice versa. The product, dose and population studied all matter.

Avoid soya if you have a soy allergy. Seek professional advice before using concentrated isoflavone supplements, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding or when taking medication.

What actually matters

Look at your diet as a whole rather than relying on one “perfect” food. Include varied protein sources and pay attention to calcium and other micronutrients. For plant-based diets, plan a reliable source of vitamin B12: unfortified soya foods should not be relied on to provide it. HealthySoya aims to make protein-rich eating approachable for women at different life stages, with information that supports informed choices rather than anxiety.

Make room for evidence, not exaggerated promises.
