What Research Says about the effect of Soya on Blood Sugar and Cholesterol levels.
- 2 min reading time
This question comes up often enough that it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. Here is what the research on soya and blood sugar actually shows, including the parts that are still unsettled.
What has been studied
Several published reviews have pooled trials in which participants ate soya protein or soya foods and had markers such as fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin measured. Some of these analyses have reported small improvements in those markers compared with control groups. Others examining similar questions have found no clear difference. Taken together, the picture is best described as modest and mixed rather than conclusive.
Where the evidence is steadier
The findings on cholesterol are more consistent than the findings on blood sugar. Multiple reviews of soya protein have reported reductions in Total and LDL cholesterol. That is a separate question from blood sugar, but it is worth knowing when you come across broad claims about soya and metabolic health, because the two are often blurred together.
The 3 things this does not mean
It does not mean soya is a treatment for any condition, because it is a food and not a therapy. It does not mean that adding a single ingredient changes an overall diet but what soya replaces. The benefit comes from replacing foods higher in saturated fat such as meat, full fat dairy with a good quality plant protein. What these studies measured was total intake over weeks and months. Thirdly it does not replace medical care: if you are managing your blood sugar, your doctor and your test results are the only reliable guide to your own numbers.
What actually helps
The clearest and least controversial finding across nutrition research is also the least glamorous. Meals that combine protein and fibre alongside carbohydrates are digested more gradually than carbohydrates eaten on their own. That principle holds for any protein source you enjoy. Soya is simply one that is complete, vegetarian and easy to keep ready at home.
Our mission: We built HealthySoya because we believe good nutrition shouldn't be complicated or expensive to get right. Our tikkis, burgers and kebabs pack 22g of complete plant protein per 100g into food that tastes like food, not a health supplement in disguise.
